Background of the Study
Biological relationship testing has become a cornerstone of forensic anthropology, especially in the context of paternity disputes. In Umuahia South Local Government Area, Abia State, forensic methods are employed to resolve contentious inheritance and family-related legal issues by determining genetic relationships. Techniques such as craniofacial analysis, dental comparisons, and DNA profiling are critical in establishing biological links when conventional records are unavailable or disputed (Chukwuemeka, 2023). Recent technological advancements have increased the precision of these methods, allowing for a more reliable determination of paternity even in complex cases (Ndukwe, 2024). However, cultural sensitivities and ethical considerations remain significant challenges in implementing these techniques. This study investigates the effectiveness of forensic anthropology in resolving paternity disputes by critically assessing current methodologies and proposing improvements that can enhance the reliability of biological relationship determinations (Amadi, 2025). The findings are expected to contribute to legal clarity and strengthen the judicial process in family law disputes.
Statement of the Problem
Paternity disputes in Umuahia South are complicated by inadequate forensic standards and the inherent complexity of determining biological relationships. Inconsistent record keeping and ethical concerns often undermine the credibility of forensic findings (Amadi, 2025). These challenges result in prolonged legal battles and uncertainty in inheritance claims. This study aims to examine the limitations of current forensic anthropological methods in paternity testing and to propose strategies for improving the reliability and acceptance of biological relationship evidence in legal contexts (Chukwuemeka, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the effectiveness of forensic anthropological techniques in paternity disputes.
To identify challenges in determining biological relationships.
To recommend methodological improvements for accurate paternity testing.
Research Questions:
How effective are current forensic methods in determining paternity?
What challenges compromise the reliability of biological relationship evidence?
What improvements can enhance forensic practices in paternity disputes?
Research Hypotheses:
H1: DNA profiling significantly improves the accuracy of paternity testing.
H2: Cultural and ethical concerns negatively impact forensic evidence acceptance.
H3: Standardized forensic protocols enhance the reliability of biological relationship determinations.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it advances the application of forensic anthropology in resolving paternity disputes. Its findings will aid legal professionals and forensic experts in establishing reliable biological relationships, thereby reducing legal ambiguities and enhancing the judicial process in family law matters (Ndukwe, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to the forensic anthropological techniques used to determine biological relationships in paternity disputes in Umuahia South Local Government Area, Abia State. It does not encompass broader aspects of genetic testing outside forensic contexts.
Definitions of Terms:
Paternity Dispute: A legal conflict regarding the biological father of a child.
Biological Relationship: A genetic connection between individuals.
Forensic Anthropology: The application of anthropological techniques to resolve legal issues involving human remains.
